Yellow Jackets Take Two From Eagles To Win ODAC Title

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALEM, Va. – Randolph-Macon swept two games from Bridgewater College on Monday evening at LewisGale Field to win the 2013 ODAC Baseball Championship. The Yellow Jackets held off the Eagles 8-7 in the opener and then took the second game, 6-2, to claim the title.

The championship is the second in the past three years for the Yellow Jackets and also secures the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament.

Monday's loss marks the third consecutive year the Eagles have lost in the title game.

The Yellow Jackets opened the deciding game with a run in the top of the first on Jeb Weymouth's RBI-single and then added two more in the second on Mitchell Keeler's two-run double to lead 3-0.

Mark Heideman doubled home a run in the fourth to give R-MC a 4-0 lead and two more runs in the sixth pushed the margin to 6-0. Nate Meiners doubled home one run for the Yellow Jackets and a single by Heideman chased home the second run of the inning to make the score 6-0.

Randolph-Macon starter Austin Bain blanked the Eagles until the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Bryan Sanderson was hit by a pitch and Jonathan Mason followed with a single up the middle. With two outs, Derrik Walling's soft liner bounced off the glove of second baseman Jake Fletcher for a single that allowed Sanderson to score, making the score 6-1.

Bridgewater added a run in the eighth on a double by Mason and a single by Andrew Hacker to make it 6-2, but R-MC closer Will Jennings retired the Eagles in the ninth for his second save of the night to preserve the victory for the Yellow Jackets.

In the opener, the Yellow Jackets erased an early 3-0 deficit and held on to defeat the Eagles, 8-7.

Bridgewater jumped on Randolph-Macon starter Matt Fischgrund for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Fulk led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a fly ball. After Mason walked, Hacker singled to score Fulk with the game's first run. A single by Walling scored Mason and a two-out single by Christian Armstrong plated Hacker, making the score 3-0.

The Yellow Jackets erased the deficit with a four-run third inning off Eagles starter Corey Armentrout. Randolph-Macon stroked six hits in the inning with Jeb Weymouth's two-run single the big blow.

Fischgrund settled down after his first-inning struggles and kept the Eagles off the board in his next five innings of work. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets stretched the lead to 7-3 with three more runs in the fifth.

Fischgrund turned it over to the bullpen after six innings and the Eagles scratched across two runs in the seventh against Yellow Jacket reliever Brandon Beiler. A throwing error allowed one Bridgewater run to score and a run-scoring single by Armstrong trimmed the deficit to 7-5. Both runs allowed by Beiler were unearned.

Matt Trentham's two-out RBI-double in the eighth inning added what proved to be an important insurance run, giving the Yellow Jackets an 8-5 lead.

The Eagles battled back in the bottom of the inning to pull to within one. With one out, Fulk singled and Sanderson was hit by a pitch. Fulk scored on a single by Mason, making the score 8-6. Sanderson trotted home on a sacrifice fly by Hacker, cutting the Randolph-Macon lead to one, 8-7.

The Eagles threatened in the ninth when pinch-hitter Matt Maher led off with a walk and pinch-runner Spencer Steele moved to second on a wild pitch. Randolph-Macon reliever Jennings then retired the next three batters to preserve the 8-7 victory and force the deciding game.

Named to the ODAC All-Tournament Team from Bridgewater were catcher Ryan Smith, Armstrong at first base, Walling at designated hitter and Fulk in the outfield. Randolph-Macon's Trentham was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

The Eagles, now 31-11 on the season, will be back in action on Saturday when they host Wesley for a Senior Day doubleheader. Bridgewater will then wait for a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament.
