GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team opened conference play Saturday afternoon with a 7-2 victory over Guilford College.
The Eagles took control of the match early by sweeping the three doubles matches.
Katie Gordon and Brittany Wilson opened play for the Eagles with an 8-2 win over Haley Andrews and Allie Guy at No. 1 doubles. Olivia Stone and Jessie Mitchell followed with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 over Guilford's Kim Kleimeier and Natalie Sutton. Rita Murphy and Miranda Donovan completed the sweep with a 8-3 victory over the Quakers' Dominique Crespo and Allison Hewitt at the No. 3 doubles position.
The Eagles sealed the verdict by controlling play at the top of the singles ladder where Bridgewater won the top three flights in straight sets.
Gordon defeated Andrews 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 while Wilson defeated Sutton by the identical scores at No. 2. At No. 3, Stone downed Crespo 6-1, 6-0.
Guilford picked up a point at No. 4 where Kleimeier slipped past Mitchell in splits sets. Kleimeier took the first set 6-1 before Mitchell evened the score by winning the second set 7-5. Kleimeier took the match by winning the tiebreaker 10-2.
Donovan picked up a win at No. 5 singles for the Eagles as she defeated Guy in split sets. The two split the first two sets, each winning by a score of 6-4 before Donovan took the match by winning a close tiebreaker, 11-9.
Hewitt picked up Guilford's second win at No. 6 singles where she got past Murphy 7-5, 6-1.
