Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Bridgewater College Eagles improved to 4-0 in the conference by sweeping a Saturday baseball doubleheader from Virginia Wesleyan College.
The Eagles, ranked No. 23 in the D3baseball.com Top 25, wn the opener 9-5 and then slipped past the Marlins 10-9 in the second game.
With the victories, the Eagles have now won nine straight games and are 9-1 overall.
Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in Game 1 when Kenny Belgrave belted a solo homer.
The Eagles took the lead with four runs in the third inning. Darren Yoder and Bryan Sanderson opened the inning with singles and both moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Fulk. A walk to Jonathan Mason loaded the bases before Andrew Hacker followed with a single to tie the score. With the bases still full, Ryan Smith cleared the sacks with a three-run double, giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
The Marlins scored one in the fourth inning, but the Eagles got that run back in the top of the sixth to lead 5-2. Virginia Wesleyan then scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score.
Bridgewater answered right back with two runs in the top of the seventh. Hacker drove in one run with a single and Mason scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch for a 7-5 Eagles lead.
Freshman Justin Petock shut the Marlins out in the seventh and eighth innings and picked up the win. Kyle Henshaw pitched a scoreless ninth to record the save.
The Marlins jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the second game, but the Eagles erased that deficit with a six-run fourth inning. A sacrifice fly by Derrik Walling put the Ealges on the board and a run-scoring double by Brendan Howell made ti 5-2. The Eagles loaded the bases and Fulk cleared them with a triple to tie the score. Fulk then scored on a double by Mason to put the Eagles on top 6-5.
The Eagles added another run in the fifth when Smith doubled and scored on a double by Zach Hynes, making the score 7-5.
The Marlins tacked on a run in the sixth, but the Eagles responded with a run in the top of the seventh. Hacker led off the inning with a single and Smith was hit by a pitch. Pinch-hitter Brandon Stein then singled to lead the bases before a groundout by Hynes scored Hacker to make the score 8-6.
The Eagles scored their final two runs in the eighth. Mason plated one run with a sac fly and Hacker chased home the second run of the inning with a single to give the Eagles a 10-6 lead.
Virginia Wesleyan scored one in the eighth and two in the ninth but Eagles pitcher Nick Corbin recorded the final out on a strikeout to finish off the 10-9 victory.
The Eagles return to action Monday when they open their California swing with a game at Occidental.
