BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Christopher Newport rallied from a 2-1 doubles deficit Saturday afternoon and won five of six singles matches to defeat Bridgewater College, 6-3 in non-conference men's tennis action.
The doubles matches offered a glimpse of how the afternoon was going to play out as all three matches were extremely close.
Brandon Larsen and Evan Stack started things on a positive note for the Eagles as they defeated Chiraag Shetty and Joona Rahko 8-5.
The Captains evened the match when Kyle Tobin and Robbie Wagner outlasted Christian Lynn and Mike Cable 9-7 in the No. 2 doubles match.
Bridgewater's Peter Hawkins and Sam Churchill slipped past Joey Manilla and Lloyd Luck, 9-8, at No. 3 doubles, winning the tiebreaker 7-3 to give the Eagles a 2-1 edge.
Hawkins stopped Shetty 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, but the Captains won the remaining five matches to take the victory.
Stack and Tobin split sets at No. 2 with Stack winning the first set 6-4 and Tobin taking the second set 6-3. Stack held a 3-2 lead in the third set when he was forced to retire.
Manilla took a tough match from Larsen at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-4 while Wagner defeated Lynn 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles flight. Rahko turned back Cable 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 while CNU's Will Sloan needed three sets to defeat Churchill. Churchill took the first set 6-1, but Sloan regrouped and won the next two sets 6-0, 6-0.
The Eagles are now6-7 overall while CNU improves to 11-4.
