Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The Bridgewater Eagles volleyball team fell behind early before storming back to take back-to-back sets and force a fifth set. Bridgewater couldn't get over the top in the fifth set as the Eagles fell to Lynchburg College by a 3-2 tally in the semifinal round the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament.
Numerous Lynchburg runs gives the Hornets the first set win by a 25-18 tally. In game two, the Eagles fight back, but fall 25-22 before pounding Lynchburg in game three, 25-10.
Bridgewater jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first set, but the teams traded points and tied the game up several times before Lynchburg went on a back-to-back three point runs to take a 17-11 lead. Megann Grimes ended the Hornet runs with a kill and cut the lead to 17-13. Two kills from the swing of Megan Lookabaugh brought the score to 22-15, but the Eagles couldn't bounce back from the Hornets' offensive efforts and dropped 25-18.
For the second set, Bridgewater took a 4-1 lead as kills from Katie Long and Lindsay Kallam opened up the set. Lynchburg responded with six straight points to take the 7-4 advantage, but Long cut off the run with a kill and sparked a four-point run for Bridgewater. Kills from Lookabaugh and Grimes pushed the Eagle lead to 11-8, but Lynchburg notched a five-point streak to take the lead, 15-14.
The game locked up at 18-18, before Long and Abby Mills pounded back-to-back kills, giving the Eagles a 20-18 advantage and forcing a Lynchburg timeout. Out of the stoppage, Lynchburg took the momentum and ran with it as it scored five straight points to go up 23-20. A Mills kill forced the side out, but back-to-back kills from Jennifer Garrett ended the set in Lynchburg's favor, 25-22.
The Eagles came out for vengeance in the third set as a kill from Maddy Carter and a service ace from Chelsea Owensby gave them a 4-1 lead. Bridgewater took advantage of crucial Lynchburg miscues and won 11 of the next 13 points to boost the lead to 15-5. The Hornets brought the score to 16-9, but the Eagles continued to use Lynchburg errors and after a Long kill and Owensby service ace, Bridgewater earned the 25-10.
Using Hornet mishaps and kills from Long and Grimes, the Eagles built a 6-2 lead in the fourth frame. Lynchburg responded by taking advantage of Bridgewater miscues and cut the lead to 12-10. Two straight Grimes' kills, followed by kills from Mills and Kallam gave Bridgewater an 18-13 advantage and forced a Lynchburg timeout.
Out of the break, Bridgewater never let up as Lookbaugh and Mills notched kills and Kallam tallied a service ace to push the lead to 22-14. Lynchburg went on a four point run of its own to cut the lead to 22-18, but Long puts the game away with the final kill, giving Bridgewater the 25-19 win and tying the match at 2-2.
Lynchburg took the early lead in the fifth set and never relinquished it as the Hornets eliminated Bridgewater from postseason contention with a 15-8 win in the fifth set and a 3-2 match victory.
Bridgewater finished the 2013 season with a 20-16 overall record and the program's second straight trip to the ODAC semifinals.
