Volleyball Falls to Lynchburg, 3-0

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater Eagles volleyball team couldn't overcome numerous miscues and a solid Lynchburg attack as the Eagles fell to the Hornets by a 3-0 score on Wednesday evening in Nininger Hall.

Lynchburg (7-11, 3-3 ODAC) took the first set by a score of 25-17 and earned a 25-18 victory in set two. The Hornets wrapped up the match with a tight 25-22 victory in the third set to hand the Eagles a tough 3-0 defeat.

Both teams traded points to open the first set, with the Eagles tying the set up at two points each off of a Megann Grimes kill.

Following the Grimes kill, the Hornets responded with three straight points before the Eagles answered right back with a three-point run of their own. A setting error on the Hornets followed by a Lindsay Kallam kill and a Katie Long kill tied the set up at a 5-5 tally.

The Hornets answered with five unanswered points to build a sizeable lead before rolling to a 25-17 victory in the opening set.

In the second set, the Eagles (9-12, 0-6 ODAC) stayed even with Lynchburg with the score remaining tied at an 11-11 tally midway through the set. Sophomore Maddy Carter pounded down a kill and the Hornets followed with an attack error as Bridgewater gained a 13-11 lead.

The Eagles maintained the lead at a 14-12 margin before a Bridgewater service error and a pair of Lynchburg service aces handed the Hornets a 15-14 lead. Freshman Megan Lookabaugh tied the set up with a kill, but it was as close as the Eagles would get as Lynchburg eventually pulled away to a 25-18 win and a 2-0 match lead.

Lynchburg controlled the final set, running out to an 8-1 lead before Bridgewater burned a timeout to slow the Hornets attack. Out of the timeout, the Eagles chipped away at the Lynchburg lead due in large part to a pair of kills from Katie Long and two kills from Rachel Donaldson as Bridgewater trimmed the gap to 12-10 in the middle portion of the set.

The Hornets ran their lead back to five points off of a kill from the swing of Amanda Perry before a feverish rally from the Eagles brought Bridgewater to within one at a 17-16 score. Kills from Abby Mills bookended the run with the Hornets committing a number of errors on the attack to allow Bridgewater to trim the gap to a manageable one-point deficit.

Bridgewater held the margin at one-point, 19-18, before three quick points from the Hornets allowed Lynchburg to build a 22-18 lead. The two teams traded points before a kill from Brittany Crawford ended the set to hand Lynchburg a 25-22 set win and a 3-0 victory in the match.

Mills and Grimes led the Bridgewater offense with eight kills each, with Grimes pacing the attack with a solid .368 attack percentage. Bridgewater was limited to a .168 attack percentage on the evening as the squad committed a costly 19 errors on the offensive side of the coin.

Senior Lindsay Kallam dished out a game-high 24 assists on the evening, while freshman Chelsea Owensby led the defense with 10 digs.

Perry led the Lynchburg offense with 11 kills to lead the Hornets to an attack percentage of .310.

Mackenzie Ross and Gabby Myers each dished out 13 assists to aid the Lynchburg offense, while Sam Page added 10 digs in the win.

Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday when it hosts a tri-match against Emory & Henry and Virginia Union. Start time against the Wasps is set for 11 a.m. with the game also being Bridgewater's Dig Pink game.
