Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. – Despite committing 10 first-half turnovers and shooting just 40% from the charity stripe, the Bridgewater Eagles women's basketball team tied the game up with 45 seconds left but couldn't get over the top in a 66-65 loss to the conference leading Royals of Eastern Mennonite in Yoder Arena.
Bridgewater (10-6, 6-5 ODAC) never led in the game as their four-game winning streak was halted.
Eastern Mennonite (14-1, 11-1 ODAC) controlled play for the majority of the first half to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room over the Eagles.
Out of the intermission, the Royals built their lead to a game-high 10 points before a 10-2 run from Bridgewater allowed the Eagles to draw to within two at a 37-35 margin with 15:27 to play, forcing an EMU timeout.
After the Royals timeout, Eastern Mennonite made a mini-run to extend its lead back to six points with under 13 to play.
Both teams exchanged scores over the next five minutes before the Royals used another small push to extend their lead to nine at a 56-47 margin with eight minutes to play.
But the Eagles weren't ready to go away.
Bridgewater chipped the lead down to three with 5:37 to play as the defensive intensity forced a number of Royals miscues and led to a 10-2 Eagles run which allowed the Eagles to pull to within a score.
With three and a half to play, Jenny Logan streaked down the floor and knocked in a layup to chip the EMU lead to one before the two teams traded scores to make the score 60-59 with 2:26 remaining.
Eastern Mennonite hit a bucket before Baltimore missed the front end of a one-and-one and Holly Morgan pulled down the rebound.
After trailing for more than 39 minutes, Logan came up big yet again at the other end, drilling a trey as the shot clock was winding down to knot the game at 64 each with 45 seconds remaining.
Yoders hit a layup for the Royals with 29 ticks left before a costly turnover and a quick foul allowed Eastern Mennonite to head to the other end for one-and-one.
Stephanie Rheinheimer hit the both free throws to push the Royals ahead by four at a 66-62 margin with 15 seconds remaining.
Mullen answered with a trey in the waning seconds but the Royals were able to get the ball inbounds to escape with a 66-65 victory.
The Purcellville, Va. native led all scorers with 18 points on the evening, with all 18 coming in the second half. Mullen finished 7-of-14 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Bridgewater was outstanding from the floor, shooting 46.8% (29-of-62) on the evening.
On the glass, Bridgewater dominated the second half to own a 41-to-34 advantage in the rebounding department. Junior Katelynn Hottinger pulled down eight boards on the evening to lead the Eagles.
Eastern Mennonite was paced by a 14-point effort from Bianca Ygarza. Yoders chipped in a dozen as well to help pace the Royals offensively. The Royals shot at a 46% clip in the second half.
Ygarza also pulled down 11 rebounds to post the double-double.
Bridgewater is back in action on Friday evening when it hosts Lynchburg. Tip-off from Nininger Hall is set for 7:00 p.m.
