Eagles Hold Off W&L, 7-4

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Bridgewater College stayed undefeated at the ODAC Baseball Tournament with a 7-4 victory Thursday afternoon over Washington and Lee at City Stadium.

The Eagles used another solid start from its pitching staff and the offense took advantage of enough opportunities to emerge with another victory.

Kevin Chandler worked seven-plus innings to pick up the win and improve to 6-1 on the season. Freshman Tyler Slanovec worked out of an eighth-inning jam and recorded his third save of the year.

"Chander battled with what he had today," Kendall said. "He really made two bad pitches and both were hit hard and drove in runs. He gave us seven solid innings. On offense we took advantage of some opportunities that W&L gave us, but I feel like we missed some chances to put W&L away early. We knew W&L would be a tough team to eliminate. Their guys are always going to battle you to the last out."

W&L nicked Chandler for a run in the top of the first, but the Eagles tied the score in the bottom of the inning. Devon Snow walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Kevin Kirk's grounder to tie the game at 1-1.

W&L starter Roger Strong lost the strike zone in the second and the Eagles took advantage. Strong walked the first three batters and reliever Joe Gannett hit Jake Wade with a pitch, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Gannett retired the next two batters before Snow drove home two runs with a single tor right for a 4-1 BC lead.

Luke Deary drove home two runs in the fifth with a double off the billboards to pull the Generals within one, 4-3, but the Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a single by Wade to lead 5-3.

The Generals finally chased Chandler in the eighth and forced the Eagles to go to the bulpen for Slanovec. Slanovec entered with runners at the corners and no outs and the Generals then bunted to move the runner at first into scoring position. Slanovec balked home a run, but the freshman worked out of the jam with a groundout and a strikeout to keep BC out front, 5-4.

"Slanovec did a great job of getting out of the eighth and keeping us in the lead when it looked like we were going to finish that inning with the score tied," Kendall said.

The Eagles then added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth and Slanovec allowed just a bunt single in the ninth to nail down the save.

The Eagles, now 25-16, will play Friday morning at 11:00 a..m. against the winner of the Randolph-Macon vs. Lynchburg game.

W&L drops to 15-15 on the season.
