Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. - Bridgewater College received two strong pitching efforts Saturday afternoon but came away with just one victory in a conference doubleheader at Roanoke College.
Roanoke edged the Eagles 1-0 in the opener, handing the Eagles their first ODAC loss of the season, and the Eagles bounced back to hammer the Maroons in the second game, 14-3.
In the opener, Tyler Grouten and Michael Haslam combined to hurl a six-hit shutout. Grouten pitched 8.1 but was lifted in the ninth after giving up a two-out double to Jonathan Mason. Haslam entered and recorded the final two outs to pick up the save.
Bridgewater's Joseph Lucas pitched a complete game but was the hard-luck loser. Lucas gave up six hits and one run in eight innings.
Roanoke scored the game's only run in the third. Matt Wallman led off with a single and Nick Sburlati walked. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Dalton Lipes before Scott Thurston singled to score Wallman from third.
Bridgewater broke the second game open with a six-run fifth to take a 7-0 lead.
Jake Wade gave the Eagles the lead with a run-scoring single in the opening frame.
In the fifth, Bryan Sanderson doubled, Devon Snow bunted for a single and Kevin Kirk walked to load the bases. Mason then doubled home two runs, making the score 3-0. After Brett Howell walked, Wade singled to drive in two more runs for a 5-0 Eagles lead. Ryan Smith was hit by a pitch, reloading the sacks, and then a Roanoke error allowed two more runs to cross the plate, making the score 7-0.
The Eagles added two more in the sixth on run-scoring doubles by Kirk and Wade and then tacked on four more in the seventh. Alex Nuttycombe and Matt Maher singled in the seventh and both scored on a single by Snow, making the score 11-1. Two Roanoke errors led to two more runs and a 13-0 Bridgewater lead.
Bridgewater scored it final run in the eighth to make it 14-1. Smith and Nuttycombe led off with singles and Smith scored on a groundout by Sanderson.
Kevin Chandler pitched seven innings to get the victory and improve to 4-0 on the season. He allowed six hits and one run. Chandler struck out seven and walked one.
Kirk was 5-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBIs and Wade finished 3-for-5 with four runs batted in.
The Eagles are now 14-11 overall and 9-1 in the ODAC. Roanoke is 9-15 overall and 1-8 in the ODAC.
