Fourth-Ranked Hornets Defeat Bridgewater, 11-4

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Shenandoah ran its season-opening winning streak to nine straight Wednesday afternoon with an 11-4 non-conference victory over the Bridgewater College Eagles.

The Hornets, 9-0 and ranked No. 4 in Division III, jumped on top with four runs in the second off Bridgewater starter Jake Wade (Lynchburg, Va./Rustburg). Clint DeHaven delivered the key blow with a three-run homer to left-center. After DeHaven's homer, Joey Donofrio added a run-scoring double, giving the Hornets a 4-0 lead.

Shenandoah added an unearned run in the third on Kurt Krout's RBI-single and Greg Van Sickler added a solo homer in the fourth for a 6-0 Shenandoah lead.

The Eagles got on the board in the fifth when they loaded the bases with one out on a walk, a single by Kevin Kirk (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) and a hit batter. Jay Thompson (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) then lined a single up the middle to score BC's first run. Shenandoah starter Brian Goddard then worked out of the jam by retiring the next two batters to avoid further damage.

The Hornets added two runs in the top of the sixth to make it 8-1 before the Eagles added two in the bottom of the frame. Bryan Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) walked and Alex Nuttycombe (Newport News, Va./Menchville) followed with a homer to make the score 8-3.

After the Hornets scored two in the seventh and one in the ninth, the Eagles scored their final run in the bottom of the ninth on Johnny Mason's RBI-groundout.

Goddard worked eight innings on the mound to pick up the victory for the Hornets. Goodard allowed three runs on 10 hits. He struck out five and walked two. Kevin Brashears led the offense with four hits in six at-bats. DeHaven was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Krout was 3-for-3 at the plate.

For the Eagles, now 5-5 on the year, Kirk, Andrew Hacker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) and Nuttycombe each finished with two hits.
