Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. - Bridgewater College strengthened its hold on first place in the ODAC baseball standings Saturday as the Eagles took two games on the road from Randolph-Macon. The Eagles won the opener 8-5 in 10 innings and then won the second game 4-3.
With the victory, the Eagles hold a two-game lead in the loss column over Lynchburg and Washington and Lee - both 6-2 in the ODAC.
Randolph-Macon took a 1-0 lead in the opener in the bottom of the first and held the advantage until the Eagles scored in the fifth. Kevin Kirk singled and scored on a double by Brett Howell to tie the score at 1-1.
The Eagles took the lead with another run in the sixth. Jay Thompson and Andrew Hacker led off with singles and both moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Nuttycombe. Thompson scored on a run-scoring groundout by Bryan Sanderson for a 2-1 lead.
Bridgewater scored again in the seventh when Jonathan Mason singled and scored on a double by Jake Wade, making the score 3-1.
After Mason scored in the seventh, the Eagles tacked on a run in the ninth. Devon Snow, singled, moved to second on a balk and took third on a grounder. He scored on a double by Mason for a 4-2 lead.
The Eagles were unable to put the Yellow Jackets away as they scored two in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score. Greg Mitro's sacrifice bunt scored one run and a single by Jordan Walton chased home the tying run.
Bridgewater put a four-spot on the board in the 10th to take a four-run lead. A bases-loaded walk to Kirk forced in the first run before Mason cleared the sacks with a three-run double to put the margin at 8-4.
After the Yellow Jackets scored a run in the bottom of the inning off Kyle Henshaw, Tyler Slanovec came out the pen to register the final three outs for the Eagles.
Lefty Joseph Lucas gave the Eagles another quality start, going 6.1 innings and allowed just two runs, one earned. He struck out six and walked two. Tyler Milstead worked 2.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits to pick up the victory.
Mason continued his torrid hitting streak, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
In the second game, Kevin Chandler pitched a complete game to lead the Eagles to the 4-3 victory.
The Eagles took the lead in Game 2 with a run in the third. Snow singled, stole second and scored on a single by Kirk. The Yellow Jackets got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a groundout by Mitro.
Jeb Weymouth's run-scoring double in the fifth gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 lead and they held the upper hand until the seventh.
Dustin Arrowood led off the seventh with a double and scored when Nuttycombe's grounder was misplayed for an error, thing the score at 2-2. Nuttycombe moved to third on a single by Snow and then scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. Snow then scored on a single by Mason for a 4-2 Eagles lead.
Weymouth blasted a solo homer in the eight to pull the Yellow Jackets to within one, 4-3, and the hosts threatened in the bottom of the ninth. A single by Peter Culver and an infield error put runners at first and second with one out. Brian Jordan flied out to center for the second out, but both runners moved up a base. With the tying run at third and the game-winning run at second, Chander retired Mitro on a line drive to right to end the game.
Chandler scattered 10 hits in the game. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Mason finished 3-for-5 with one run batted in to lead the Eagles at the plate.
With the two victories, Bridgewater is now 12-10 overall and 7-0 in the ODAC. The Eagles return to action Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Eastern Mennonite for another ODAC contest.
