Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Roanoke College erased a 12-point halftime deficit Saturday afternoon and outlasted the Bridgewater College Eagles, 108-98, in double-overtime in ODAC men's basketball action at Nininger Hall.
The Eagles had several chances to secure the victory but were unable to make the plays to put the Maroons away.
Bridgewater appeared to have the game in hand when Kyle Hammond hit two free throws with 11 seconds left in regulation, giving the Eagles a 72-66 lead.
Roanoke pushed the ball into the offensive end and Melvin Felix knocked down a 3-pointer to make it a three-point game with six seconds remaining.
Following a Maroons' timeout, the Eagles turned the ball over and Roanoke's Ethan Humphries picked up the loose ball. Humphries spotted Corey Poindexter open beyond the arc and the Roanoke guard buried a long 3-pointer with one second left to send the game to overtime with the score tied at 72-72.
In the first overtime, the Eagles led by six, 83-77, with 1:59 left, but once again the Maroons would not go away.
A layup by Logan Singleton made it a two-point game with 50 seconds left, but Cody Griffith converted a 3-point to put the Eagles up by five, 86-81, with 39 seconds on the clock.
This time, the free throw line proved to be the problem for the Eagles as they made just 2-of-6 down the stretch.
With six seconds remaining, Drew Maynard hit the first of a two-shot foul to put the Eagles on top 88-86. Maynard missed the second and Roanoke's Logan Singleton hit both free throws to tie the score. The Eagles had two shots in the closing seconds, but were unable to connect. Griffith's 3-point shot was wide and Hammond's off-balance follow shot missed at the buzzer to send the game to the second overtime.
The second OT was all Roanoke as the Maroons scored the first nine points and were able to leave Nininger Hall with the 108-98 victory.
"It was another great ODAC basketball game for the fans. Roanoke made plays when they needed them and found away to win the basketball game," Bridgewater head coach Don Burgess said. "Once again we played hard and played together, but we didn't play smart basketball in the second half. When we do all three – play hard, play together and play smart – we will start winning some of these close basketball games."
Rick Maloney finished with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 boards. Hammond also finished with 17 points and Justin Brake added a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Griffith with 16 points and Rashad Moore with 10 rounded out BC's double digit scoring.
Felix led all scorers with 22 points and Singleton added 21 for Roanoke. Matt Crizer added 17 points followed by Kwasi Amponsah with 14 and Terrell Johnson with 10.
The Eagles are now 6-11 overall and 2-6 in the ODAC. The Maroons evened their record and 8-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Bridgewater hits the road Monday night for a game against nationally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan.
