#9 Hornets Stifle Bridgewater 11-1 in South Region Opener

Box Score

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The USA South Champion No. 9 Shenandoah Hornets (35-8) scored in six of their eight innings at the plate while the Bridgewater Eagles offense was held in check as the Eagles fell by an 11-1 tally in the opening game of the 2010 NCAA Division III South Region Championships at Methodist University.

Both teams remained scoreless through the first inning before the Hornets tagged three runs on the board in the second inning off of a three-RBI single from the bat of Jon Holcomb.

Shenandoah added a run in the third when an Alex Woods single drove in Scott Van Dusseldorp to make the game 4-0.

With a four run lead after three innings, the Hornets tagged two more runs on the board in the fourth off of a Greg Van Sickler double. Van Sickler drove a ball to right field which went over a diving Blake Stokely before going to the fence, allowing Van Sickler to score pushing the game to a 6-0 score.

Shenandoah tagged three more runs on the board over the next two innings, while Van Sickler continued to hold the Eagles (23-19-1) bats in check.

Following a scoreless seventh inning, junior Devon Snow drilled a Van Sickler pitch over the left center field fence to cut the Hornets lead to 9-1.

After the Eagles put a run on the board, Shenandoah drove in two more of their own in the bottom of the inning to finalize the scoring at an 11-1 tally.

Senior Andy Chrismer led the Eagles at the plate with a 3-for-4 day, while Snow's 2-for-4 day with a homer accounted for the lone BC run.

BC starter Alex Foltz tossed 4.2 innings of work, allowing seven runs on 12 hits to pick up the loss. Bridgewater used five pitchers in the loss.

For Shenandoah, Jesse Henry's 4-for-5 game led the way at the plate as the top eight hitters in the lineup each recorded at least one hit.

Van Sickler picked up the win for the Hornets tossing eight innings of work. The junior allowed seven hits and one run while striking out five.

With the loss, the Eagles fall to the loser's bracket and will play the loser of the LaGrange v. Salisbury contest.
