BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Mary Washington took the
lead with one run in the sixth and added two more in the seventh to
hold of the Bridgewater College Eagles, 8-6, Thursday. The loss
snapped Bridgewater's eight-game winning streak.
Mary Washington got on the board first with a run in the top of
the second, but the Eagles answered with Alex Nuttycombe's
RBI-single in the bottom of the inning to tie the score.
The visitors took advantage of a BC error to score twice in the
top of the third. Will Wright and Alex Howell drove in runs to give
Mary Washington a 3-1 lead.
Bridgewater forged ahead with a three-run fifth inning. Devon
Snow and Drew Easter
singled to start the inning and both runners moved up on a
sacrifice bunt by Mitchell Edwards. Snow
scored on a bloop double to right by Andy Chrismer and Easter
scooted home on a wild pitch to tie the score. Chrismer came around
to score on a sacrifice fly by Brett Howell, giving Bridgewater a
4-3 lead.
The lead did not last long as Mary Washington responded with two
runs in the top of the sixth to regain the lead. Alex Howell walked
and Nick Espinosa singled to lead off the inning. Both runners
moved up on a wild pitch and Howell scored on a sacrifice fly by
Shane Sixsmith, tying the score at 4-4. Pinch-hitter Matt Kaler
then plated Espinosa with a single to center, giving the visitors a
5-4 lead.
Bridgewater tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Blake Stokely doubled
and scored on a single by Nuttycombe.
Mary Washington scored once in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead.
Santino Rosanova drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single to
right.
Two more runs in the eighth gave Mary Washington an 8-5
advantage. Sixsmith and Kaler singled and Seamus Bergen walked to
load the bases. Sixsmith scored on a groundout by Eric Rehbein,
making the score 7-5. Kaler raced home on a single by Wright for an
8-5 Mary Washington lead.
The Eagles had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the eighth,
but came up short. Drew
Elkins and Nuttycombe singled to start the inning and Devon
Snow bunted for a single to load the sacks with no outs.
Pinch-runner Matt
Maher scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Easter, but reliever
Ryan Engelking retired the next two batters to preserve Mary
Washington's two-run lead.
Torey Mancari, the second of three Mary Washington pitchers
picked up the win, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing one run on two
hits. Engelking got the final six outs to record the save.
Nuttycombe led the Bridgewater offense with a 3-for-4 effort at
the plate and two RBIs. Easter, Elkins and Snow each added two hits
for BC.
Bridgewater is now 17-13 overall while Mary Washington improves
to 18-6.
