LYNCHBURG, Va. - Lynchburg College pushed
across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday afternnon to
force extra innings and then won the game, 14-13, with a run in the
bottom of the 10th over the Bridgewater College Eagles.Despite the
loss, the Eagles (19-17-1, 14-4 ODAC) will enter the conference
tournament as the No. 1 seed.
Bridgewater jumped out to a quick lead with two runs in the
first. The Eagles opened the game with three straight singles Drew Easter, Devon Snow
and Andy Chrismer
to lead 1-0. Another run scored on a double play, making the score
2-0.
The Hornets took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the
second, but the Eagles regained the lead with three run in the
fourth. With two outs, a pair of walks and a hit batsman loaded the
bases. One run scored on an error and Chrismer drove in a run with
a single, making the score 4-3. Brett Howell then singled home
another run for a 5-3 BC lead.
After the Hornets tied the score with two runs in the bottom of
the fourth, BC tallied four times in the top of the fifth. Jonathan
Mason, Drew Elkins
and Alex Hogge led off
the inning with singles as the Eagles took a 6-5 lead. Alex Nuttycombe walked to
load the sacks and Easter drew a bases loaded walk, making the
score 7-5. Snow then drove home a pair of runs with a single to
center, giving the Eagles a 9-5 lead.
Bridgewater struck for four more runs in the seventh to lead
13-7. Nuttycombe led off with a double and moved to third on
Easter's single. Snow's grounder scored a run and Snow was safe on
the play on an error. Chrismer drove home a run with a single and
another Hornets error allowed another run to score, making the
score 12-7. After a double play grounder, Jonathan Mason singled
home Chrsimer for a 13-7 BC lead.
The Eagles were unable to hold on as the Hornets rallied with
five runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within one,
13-12.
Bridgewater was one out away from the win in the ninth but Jeff
Lincoln drove in the tying run with a two-out single to force extra
innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, Brandon Garnett lined a one-out
single to right to drive home the final run in Lynchburg's 14-13
victory.
Chrismer was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Easter finished 3-for-4
with three runs scored to lead Bridgewater's offense.
