WASHINGTON D.C. - Catholic University scored
five runs in the final two innings to edge Bridgewater College, 6-5
in non-conference baseball action Wednesday.
The Eagles struck first, scoring once in the top of the second.
Drew Elkins reached second on an outfield error and moved to third
on a groundout. Elkins scored on an RBI-groundout by Alex
Nuttycombe for a 1-0 BC lead.
Catholic tied the score with a run in the third but a
run-scoring single by Elkins put the Eagles back on top 2-1 in the
fourth. Drew Easter then added a solo homer in the fifth to put the
Eagles ahead 3-1.
Meanwhile Bridgewater starter John Bayse was putting together
the best outing of his career. The righthander limited the
Cardinals to one unearned run on six hits in. He struck out four,
walked just one and left the game after seven innings with a 3-1
lead.
Bridgewater padded the margin with two runs in the top of the
eighth. With one out Andy Chrismer singled and moved to third on a
groundout. Chrismer scored on Easter's two-out single and Easter
raced home on a triple by Devon Snow as the Eagles opened up a 5-1
lead.
The bullpen, however, was able to hold on. Catholic scored three
runs in the eighth to pull to within one and the Cardinals won it
in the ninth on L.J. Travaglia's walkoff single.
Snow led the Eagles at the plate with a 4-for-t effort and one
RBI. Chrismer was 3-for-4 with a run scored and Easter finished
2-for-4 with two runs scored and two more batted in.
The Eagles, now 17-16-1 on the season, close out their home
schedule Saturday when they host Guilford for an ODAC doubleheader.
First pitch is slated for noon.
