BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Averett Cougars pounded
out 28 hits Tuesday afternoon and pulled away for a 24-10 victory
in a non-conference baseball slugfest.
The Cougars wasted little time in taking the upper hand as
leadoff batter Adam Higgins rounded the bases with an inside the
park homer to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Averett added three more
runs in the opening frame to lead 4-0.
The Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the first when Drew
Easter led off with a single and scored on Brett Howell's two-out
double.
Averett added two runs in the second, but the Eagles answered
with a two-run homer by Mitchell Edwards, making the score 6-3.
The Eagles scored two more in the third on Andrew Hacker's
two-run homer, making the score 6-5, but Averett responded with
five runs in the top of the fourth to open up an 11-5 lead. Michael
Moore and Eric McGuire each ripped two-run doubles to highlight the
inning for the Cougars.
The Eagles continued to claw back. Two runs in the bottom of the
fourth and two more in the fifth trimmed the margin to 12-9. Devon
Snow drove in all four runs for the Eagles with a two-run homer in
the fourth and two-run single in the fifth.
The BC pitching staff, however, was unable to quiet the Averett
hitters as the Cougars scored five runs in the sixth and four in
the seventh to put the game away.
Snow was 2-for-5 with four RBIs to lead the BC offense. Howell
and Edwards were both 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs each.
