Box Score 2 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Bridgewater College lost
the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney in
extra innings, but the Eagles bounced back to hammer the Tigers,
21-4 in Game 2 to earn a split in ODAC baseball action.
In the opener, the Eagles rallied from an early 3-1 lead to take
the lead in into the sixth, but were unable to hold on as the
Tigers came back to win in the bottom of the eighth.
Bridgewater took the lead in the top of the sixth. Brett Howell
and Andrew Hacker led off the inning with singles and Blake Stokely
chased two run home with a double to put the Eagles on top 4-3.
The Eagles were two outs away in the bottom of the seventh from
taking Game 1, but a run-scoring single by Herbie Williams tied the
score and send the game to extra innings.
Bridgewater pitcher Drew Elkins retired the first two batters in
the bottom of the eighth before three consecutive singles won the
game for the Tigers.
Elkins went the distance and took the loss. He allowed 10 hits
in 7.2 innings and just three earned runs. He struck out five and
walked just one.
Stokely was 3-for-3 in the opener with two RBIs and Hacker added
a pair of hits.
In the second game, the Eagles unloaded on the Tigers pitching
staff for 20 hits in the 21-4 victory.
The Eagles jumped on the Tigers with four runs in the first and
never looked back.
Easter was hit by a pitch to open the first and moved to second
on a groundout. With two outs, Easter scored on a single by Andy
Chrismer to take a 1-0 lead. After Chrismer moved to second on a
passed ball, Hacker delivered a run-scoring single to make it 2-0.
Hacker then moved to third on a double by Howell and Stokely
followed with a two-run single for a 4-0 Bridgewater lead.
After giving up two runs in the second, BC starter Alex Foltz
was in command. He allowed two more runs, both unearned, and worked
seven innings to pick up the victory. Foltz allowed seven hits
while striking out six and walking three. Jake Wade and Hacker
finished up with one scoreless inning each.
At the plate, Stokely had another big game, going 3-for-6 with
four RBIs and Kevin Kirk finished 4-for-6 with four RBIs. Chrismer
was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in while Hacker knocked in three
runs with a 3-for-6 effort at the plate. Mitchell Edwards and Devon
Snow also contributed two hits each to Eagles' attack.
Bridgewater is now 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC.
Hampden-Sydney drops to 5-3 overall and 13- in conference play.
