BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Shenandoah University scored
three runs in the eighth inning Thursday and four more in the ninth
to rally for an 11-8 victory over Bridgewater College.
The Eagles took advantage of three Shenandoah errors in the
first two innings to take a quick 3-0 lead.
Drew Easter reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the
first and Kevin Kirk followed with a double to put the Eagles on
top 1-0. Another Shenandoah error kept the inning alive and
Kirk scored on a double by Brett Howell, making the score 2-0.
The Eagles added another unearned run in the second on a
RBI-single by Mitchell Edwards, making the score 3-0.
Bridgewater starter Kevin Chandler retired the first nine
batters in order before running into trouble in the fourth.
Chandler walked the first two batters and both scored on a double
by Scott Van Dusseldorp to trim the BC lead to 3-2.
The Eagles got both runs back in the bottom of the fourth
inning. Devon Snow walked to lead off the inning and Drew Easter
bunted for a single. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners up before a
walk to Edwards loaded the sacks. Andy Chrismer drew a walk to
force in one run and Howell plated another with a sacrifice
fly for a 5-2 BC lead.
The Hornets, currently ranked No. 20 in nation in the latest
Division III poll, scored one run in the sixth and finally
chased Chandler with another run in the seventh to 5-4.
The Eagles added another unearned run in the bottom of the
seventh to take a 6-4 lead but the bullpen was unable to hold on.
Jesse Henry doubled to lead off the eighth for the Hornets and
Greg Van Sickler singled. Brashears scored on a singled by Van
Dusseldorp to make it a one-run game. Cory Nelson singled in the
tying run before Van Dusseldorp scored from third on a pop foul to
first as the Eagles failed to cover home on the play.
The Hornets added four more in the top of the ninth with Henry's
two-run homer the big blow.
Chandler pitched well in a no-decision for the Eagles,
allowed four runs, three earned on three hits in 6.1 innings. He
struck out five and walked two. Kirk and Howell each drove in a
pair of runs for the BC offense.
Van Dusseldorp led the Hornets with a 3-for-5 effort at the
plate and four RBIs.
The Eagles, now 3-5 overall, entertain Greensboro on
Friday. Shenandoah is now 4-3 on the season.
