BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Ferrum College took
advantage of early miscues by Bridgewater College and pulled away
for a 14-3 non-conference victory on Thursday.
Ferrum scored three runs in the third to break a scoreless tie.
Leadoff batter Kevin Crump struck out but reached first safely on a
passed ball. Jason Butterworth was hit by a pitch while attempting
to bunt to put two runners on. The Eagles then misplayed Paul
Jaglowski's bunt to load the bases with no outs. With one Caleb
Dorton singled to left to put the Panthers on the board. Charles
Beacom followed with a two-run single, giving Ferrum a 3-0 lead.
The Panthers added two more in the fifth on a mammoth two-run
homer by Justin Franklin and one in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead.
Bridgewater tried to climb back in the game with two runs in the
bottom of the sixth. Matt Maher led off with a single to center and
scored on Devon Snow's double to put the Eagles on the board. Snow
scored on a single by Kevin Kirk, making the score 6-2.
Ferrum got those runs back in its next at bat to take an 8-2
lead and the Panthers coasted the rest of the way.
Bridgewater's final run came on a solo homer by Brett Howell.
Kirk and Andy Chrismer were the only Eagles with more than one
hit as each finished 2-for-4.
Jon Wilson picked up the win for the Panthers. He worked
six-plus, solid innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked
one and struck out one.
The Eagles, now 9-12, are back in action Saturday when they host
Roanoke for an ODAC twinbill. The first game begins at noon.
