BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College
sophomore Kevin Chandler pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout
Wednesday to lead the Eagles to a 4-0 ODAC victory over rival
Eastern Mennonite.
Chandler took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but with one
out Eagles' rightf ielder Blake Stokely was unable to make a
lunging catch near the line on a fly ball off the bat Aaron Martin,
giving the Royals their first hit.
EMU's only other hit came with two out in the ninth when Dylan
Smith lined a double to the gap in right center.
Chandler completely shut down an EMU lineup that entered the
game leading the ODAC in hitting. The lanky righthander struck out
six, walked one and induced 13 groundball outs.
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Kevin Kirk walked and stole second. With two outs, Andy Chrismer
singled through the left side to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
BC padded the margin with two runs in the bottom of the third.
With one out, Drew Easter walked and moved to second on an errant
pickoff throw. A single by Kirk put runners at the corners and a
walk to Mitchell Edwards loaded the bases. Chrismer then hit a
sacrifice fly to right to give the Eagles a 2-0. With runners now
at the corners, Edwards stole second and Kirk scored from third
when the catcher's throw to second bounced away for an error.
The Eagles added their final run in the seventh when Matt Hacker
doubled and Devon Snow walked. A sacrifice bunt by Easter moved the
runners up a base and pinch runner Jonathan Mason scored from third
on a wild pitch to put BC on top 4-0.
EMU starter Jason Tate pitched well in a losing cause. The lefty
worked six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits.
He struck out three and walked five.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 6-9 overall and 3-1 in the
ODAC. EMU dropped to 6-5, 3-3 in the conference.
The Eagles are back in action Friday afternoon when they host
Virginia Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
