BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Jake Johnson
scored off an offensive rebound with 1.9 seconds left to play
Tuesday night, lifting the Bridgewater College Eagles to a 61-59
victory over Randolph College in the opening round of the ODAC
tournament played at Nininger Hall.
"Dom took the shot early enough to give us a chance to go to the
glass," BC head coach Don Burgess said. "Jake went to the rim and
made a heady play to get us the win."
With the victory, the Eagles advanced to the quarterfinals
Friday at the Salem Civic Center where they will meet rival Eastern
Mennonite, the No. 1 seed, at 1:00 p.m.
"I'd like to thank the fans who did come out tonight and watch
us play," said Burgess. "They served as our sixth man when we
needed them. I'm proud of the guys for finding a way to win a close
game at the end."
For Bridgewater faithful, Tuesday's game bore an eerie
resemblance to the regular season game won by the WildCats at
Nininger Hall. In the regular season game, the Eagles led by double
digits in the second half only to see Randolph grind away and
overtake BC down the stretch.
The Eagles opened up a double-figure lead, 43-29, early in the
second half Tuesday and once again the WidlCats rallied as the
Bridgewater offense went stone-cold from the field. After taking
the 14-point lead, the Eagles scored just 10 points during the next
12:07 of play.
By that time the Wildcats had erased the entire deficit, tying
the score, 53-53, when Jason Rutschman made the first of two foul
shots.
Randolph took its first lead at the 3:54 mark on a layup by
Caleb Pearson, but the Eagles answered with a driving layup by
Dominic Trawick to tie the score at 55-55.
Randolph gained the upper hand again on a layup but Derrick
Woods-Morrow, but once again BC answered, this time on Johnson's
short jumper to tie the game at 57-all with one minute left.
After a Randolph turnover, Trawick hit two foul shots, giving BC
the lead, but Woods-Morrow threw down a dunk on a backdoor cut to
tie the score with 8.9 seconds remaining.
The Eagles pushed the ball upcourt, but Trawick misfired on a
long 3-point try. The rebound bounced Johnson's way and he laid the
ball off the glass for the winning bucket with 1.9 seconds left in
the game.
Trawick led three Eagles in double figures with 19 points.
Justin Brake scored 12 and Johnson added 10.
"This was a great team win," Burgess said. "We got great
contributions from Justin Brake, Rick Maloney and Kyle Hammond.
That's what's supposed to happen at tournament time. Guys who may
not be your marquee guys step up and make plays."
Rutschman led the Wildcats with 15 and Woods-Morrow finished
with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards.
Colton Hunt added 10 points for Randolph.
"We knew Clay (Randolph head coach Clay Nunley) and his guys
were going to come in here and fight for 40 minutes," Burgess
added. "They are a gritty bunch and they just took that deficit and
kept chipping away."
The Eagles are now 10-14 on the season while Randolph finishes
the year at 10-15.
