NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - For the second straight
day, the Bridgewater College Eagles lost a game in the bottom of
the ninth, this time to Christopher Newport, 4-3.
The Eagles tied the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the
fifth. Jake Wade doubled and Alex Nuttycombe reached on an error.
With two outs, Kevin Kirk doubled down the rightfield line to score
both runners.
CNU took the lead with a run in the bottom of the eighth, but
the Eagles forged a tie with a run in the top of the ninth. Drew
Elkins singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Elkins took
third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball to tie the score
at 3-3.
Drue Vernon led off the bottom of the ninth with a single off BC
reliever John Bayse and took second on a sacrifice bunt. Luke
Saunders then delivered a game-winning single for the final 4-3
victory.
Elkins received a no-decision on the mound after working 7.1
solid innings. The senior allowed three runs on five hits. He
struck out seven and walked five.
The Eagles are now 1-4 on the season.
