DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University took
advantage of Bridgewater fielding mistakes and then rode a strong
performance from its bullpen to defeat the Eagles, 11-9, Wednesday.
Averett took a 4-0 lead in the first before the Eagles tied the
score with four runs in the top of the second. Drew Easter's
three-run double hightlighted the inning.
After Averett scored two runs in the bottom of the second to
lead 6-4, the Eagles took their first lead with four runs in the
fourth. Kevin Kirk and Drew Elkins had run-coring singles and Blake
Stokely drove in two runs with a single.
The lead didn't last long as the Cougars scored four runs int he
bottom of the fourth to lead 10-8.
Bridgewater pulled to within one, 10-9, with an unearned run in
the sixth, but the Averett bullpen blanked the Eagles over the
final three innings to preserve the win.
The Eagles finished with 11 hits with Edwards, Andy Chrismer,
Kirk and Stokely each contributing two hits.
Alex Foltz took the loss, allowing nine hits in 4.1 innings.
Foltz allowed 10 runs, with only half of the runs being earned.
Jake Wade pitched the final 3.2 innings and allowed just one run on
four hits.
Kyle Newcomb and James Carter had three hits each to lead
Averett's 13 hit attack.
The Eagles are 1-2 overall while Averett improves to 4-2.
