STAUNTON, Va. – Bridgewater used an early
20-4 run to pull away from Mary Baldwin early as the Eagles topped
the Squirrels by a 67-55 tally in out-of-conference action.
An early Eagles run gave BC a 20-4 lead with under 12minutes to
play in the first half as the Bridgewater defense ratcheted up,
forcing early Mary Baldwin miscues, while the offense fired on all
cylinders. Bridgewater’s defense held the Squirrels to one
field goal in the first seven minutes of the contest.
Mary Baldwin used a 6-0 spurt to cut Bridgewater’s lead to
20-11 with ten minutes left in the opening stanza.
Bridgewater responded when a pair of Jenny Logan jumpers kick
started a 12-2 BC run to give the Eagles a 32-15 lead with under
six to play in the first half.
During the final three minutes of the opening stanza, the
Squirrels forced a number of Eagles miscues which led to Mary
Baldwin netting eight of the 10 points scored to chip
Bridgewater’s lead to a 34-23 tally at the break.
Junior Jordan Burkholder led the way for the Eagles in the
opening 20 minutes with nine.
Bridgewater opened the scoring in a hurry in the second half with
a pair of buckets in the first minute to build its lead to 38-23.
The two teams traded buckets over the next seven-plus minutes as
the Eagles extended their lead to 48-32 with under 12 to play.
Mary Baldwin cut Bridgewater’s lead to as low as 11 on a
number of occasions in the second half, but it was the Eagles
eventually prevailing by a 67-55 tally.
Bridgewater was led by a trio of Eagles in double figures
Burkholder’s 19 leading the way. Senior Kristin Bosserman
chipped in a dozen while Bianca Booker knocked in 10 to go along
with 10 boards to pick up the double-double.
Mary Baldwin was led by a 22 point performance from Sabrina
Desper, while Kara Hawkins led the way on the glass with a
game-high 16 boards.
BC outrebounded the Squirrels by a 58-to-47 margin, while the
team held Mary Baldwin to an ice-cold 27% from the field.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday when the squad takes
on Randolph. The game marks BC’s WBCA PinkZone contest and
tips off at 1:00 p.m. Prizes, contests and various activities will
highlight Saturday’s men’s and women’s
doubleheader at Nininger Hall. The WBCA PinkZone game honors former
N.C. State women’s basketball coach Kay Yow who a year ago
lost her lengthy battle with breast cancer and raises money for
cancer research.
