Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The hot-shooting Guilford Quakers pulled away in the second half Saturday afternoon to defeat Bridgewater College, 78-65, in ODAC men's basketball action.
The Quakers shot an even 60 percent for the game, hitting 33-of-55 field goal attempts. The Eagles shot a respectable 47.4 percent from the floor, including 50 percent in the second half, but Bridgewater was unable to come up with stops at the defensive end.
The Eagles trailed by just three at the break, 37-34, and the margin was one at the 16:53 mark of the second half when BC's Rick Maloney knocked down a 12-foot jumper, making the score 41-40.
The Eagles tied the score at 43-43 on a Kyle Hammond 3-pointer and then took their first lead of the second half when Cody Griffith converted his steal into a layup for a 45-43 BC lead.
Bridgewater was still up two, 49-47, on Hammond's layup at the 13:17 mark, but Guilford ran off the next 16 points to take a 63-49 lead and held off the Eagles the rest of the way for the 78-65 victory. Bridgewater went almost seven minutes without a point during Guilford's decisive second-half run.
Griffith led the Eagles (2-6, 0-2 in the ODAC) with a game-high 20 points. Maloney added 14 points and Hammond scored 12.
Tobin Akinsola paced the Quakers (5-2, 1-0 in the ODAC) with 16 points. Josh Pittman added 12 followed by T.C. Anderson with 11 and Travis Tracy with 10.
The Quakers hammered the Eagles on the boards by a 35-19 margin with Akinsola leading the way with nine rebounds.
The Eagles are back in action Saturday on the first day of the BC/Don Glick Invitational. The Eagles play Bluefield College in the 8:00 p.m. game Saturday. The first game at 6:00 p.m. featured Eastern Mennonite against Averett.
