Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. – Despite holding
Eastern Mennonite scoreless from a five-plus minute stretch in the
second half, the Bridgewater Eagles (3-4, 1-3 ODAC) women's
basketball team couldn't overcome 23 turnovers as the team
fell to EMU 68-55 at Yoder Arena.
Eastern Mennonite (9-0, 5-0 ODAC) netted 21 of its 38 second
half points from the line and was able to extend its lead during
its scoreless drought to remain perfect on the season.
Turnover woes turned the crosstown showdown into a sloppy
contest in the early going as the two teams committed 18 turnovers
in the first 12 minutes.
Bridgewater was able to hold the game close despite the early
turnovers until poor shooting and a five minute scoring drought in
the second part of the opening frame allowed Eastern Mennonite to
extend its lead to 10 at 30-20 with 1:50 to play.
Across the half's final two minutes, the Eagles used a
four point spurt to bring the EMU lead to 30-24 as the teams headed
to the locker room.
Both teams turned the ball over a combined 28 times in the
opening 20 minutes, with Bridgewater recording 13 giveaways
compared to the Royals' 15.
Freshman Jackie Buckley knocked in a career-high 12 points in
the first half to lead all scorers.
Eastern Mennonite used a 12-5 run to start the second half to
build its biggest lead of the game at 46-33 with 13:02 and change
to play.
Bridgewater gained a huge momentum boost following a timeout by
going on a 8-2 run to bring the game within seven at 48-41 with
10:41 to play.
EMU survived a five-plus minute drought from the field by
converting at the charity stripe to build its lead back to 11 with
10 minutes remaining.
BC held the Royals scoreless from the field from the 13:53 mark
to the 8:09 mark in the middle of the final stanza, but quality
free throw shooting from EMU allowed the team to extend its lead to
56-43.
Both teams would trade points for the remainder of the game as
the Eagles eventually fell to Eastern Mennonite 68-55.
Buckley's 14 led all scorers, while Jordan Burkholder
chipped in 11 in a losing effort. Buckley also pulled down a
game-high 11 boards as the Eagles outrebounded the Royals by a
44-37 tally.
EMU was led by Snyder's game-high 16, while the Royals had
three players in double-figures.
The Royals outshot BC by a 41-33% tally.
Eastern Mennonite was 22-of-31 from the line, while the Eagles
were 9-of-14.
Bridgewater is back in action on Friday when the squad hosts
Guilford at Nininger Hall. Tip-off from Bridgewater is slated for
7:00 p.m.
