Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Despite four players
in double figures, the Bridgewater Eagles women's basketball
team couldn't overpower a strong inside game from Roanoke
College (12-2, 9-1 ODAC) as the Eagles fell to the visiting Maroons
by a 72-63 score.
Bridgewater (7-6, 5-5 ODAC) fell behind the conference's
top team early as the Maroons jumped out to an 11-6 lead with 16:38
to play in the opening half.
Over the course of the game's next five minutes, the
Eagles would twice tie the game up until a 5-0 mini-spurt from the
Maroons gave Roanoke a 20-15 advantage with 9:04 left in the first
half.
BC then used an 11-2 run sparked by a trio of threes to take a
four point lead at 26-22 with 5:17 to go in the opening frame.
Roanoke used a four point outburst to bring the game to a tie at
26 all with four and change to play before Bridgewater outscored
the Maroons by an 8-7 tally over the final four minutes to take a
34-33 lead into the locker room.
Out of the halftime intermission, Roanoke used a 13-3 run to
build up a then game-high seven point advantage at 46-37 with 16:05
remaining.
Roanoke would control the first nine minutes of the second half
to build a 56-45 lead with 11 and change to play before the Eagles
began to chip away at the Maroons' lead.
Bridgewater used a 9-0 spurt to cut the Roanoke lead to two with
7:09 left as the Maroons held a slim 56-54 lead.
Roanoke ran the lead back up to nine points with 5:31 to play,
before a last ditch Bridgewater run brought the game back to a
two-point differential at 65:63 with 1:41 left.
Over the final 100 seconds, Roanoke converted five free throws
to put the game out of reach en route to a 72-63 Old Dominion
Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the Eagles in Nininger
Hall.
Junior Jordan Burkholder netted a game-high 18 points to lead
the Eagles offense. Burkholder was 5-of-11 from the floor and went
a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to lead all scorers.
Senior Kristin Bosserman chipped in 11 from BC, while Lacey Barnett
and Katelynn Hottinger each netted an additional 10 for the Eagles.
On the glass, freshman Jackie Buckley led the Eagles with seven
boards.
For Roanoke, the tandem of Jordan Gholson and Nicci Moats led a
balanced Maroons offense with five players in double figures with
14 a piece. Caitlyn Long also chipped in 13, while Kendra Porter
and Jaleesa Osborne knocked in 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Roanoke was led on the glass by Moats who added 10 rebounds to
pick up the double-double.
Roanoke outrebounded BC by a 40-to-32 margin, while the Eagles
outshot Roanoke by a slim 40%-to-39% tally.
In the paint, Roanoke led the way by a 30-to-14 margin.
Bridgewater is back in action on Thursday when NAIA Southern
Virginia visits Nininger Hall. Tip-off against the Knights is
slated for 7:00 p.m.
