Bridgewater College scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth
inning Wednesday to defeat Eastern Mennonite, 9-8, in ODAC baseball
action.
The Eagles appeared to be on their way to an easy win behind a
sterling performance by starting pitcher Drew Elkins. Elkins
pitched seven shutout innng and left with BC on top 7-0. Elkins
allowed nine hits and no runs while striking out six. He did not
walk a batter.
The Eagles' bullpen, however, was unable to hold the lead.
EMU's Chris Harpine belted a two-run homer in the eighth, to make
the score 7-2.
In the top of the ninth, Harpine blasted a three-run shot and the
Royals were back in the game, trailing just 7-5. Two walks and a
single loaded the bases and Daniel Martin then delivered a double
to tie the score 1t 7-7. An intentional walk loaded the bases again
and the go-ahead run scored on a passed ball.
In the bottom of the ninth, Mitchell Edwards singled with one out
and scored all the way from first on Aaron Read's two-out double,
tying the score at 8-8. Brett Howeell then singled to center,
scoring Read with the winning run.
Both teams collected 18 hits in the ballgame.
Tyler Hodges, Andy Chrismer Edwards and Read each finished the day
with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate. Mike Lenox, Howell and Drew
Easter added two hits apiece.
Harpine led the Royals offense with four hits and five RBIs.
The Eagles are now 13-13 overall and 6-5 in the ODAC. EMU drops to
7-15-1 overall and 2-7 in the ODAC.
