Tigers shut down Eagles, 5-1

Hampden-Sydney won Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader, defeating Bridgewater College, 5-1, at Jopson Field. Game 2 will be played Tuesday night at 7:30 at Rebel Park in New Market.

John West hurled a complete-game to pick up the victory for the Tigers. West allowed nine hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

The Tigers' Herbie Williams broke up a scoreless contest when he led off the fourth with a homer. The Tigers added another run in the fourth when the Eagles botched a rundown, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Hampden-Sydney added an unearned run in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth to lead 5-0.

West lost his shutout in the bottom of the seventh when Brett Howell doubled and scored on a single by Kevin Kirk.
