Eagles advance to championship game

Box Score

Bridgewater College will get the chance to defend its ODAC women's basketball championship Sunday at the Salem Civic Center.

The Eagles (17-10) advanced to the title game with a 69-58 victory Saturday over No. 1 seed Roanoke College. BC will meet Randolph-Macon for the championship. R-MC pulled away in the second half to defeat Virginia Wesleyan, 75-55.

Senior forward Jennifer Saunders scored a career high 22 points and fellow senior Rebecca Henderson added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles past the Maroons. Emiliegh Lambert pitched in with 11 points for BC.

Roanoke scored the first 10 points of the game, but by halftime the Eagles trailed by just two, 30-28.

Lambert's three-point play gave the Eagles a 33-32 lead and they never trailed the rest of the way.

The game was tied four times after Lambert's three-point play, the last coming at 48-48.

A layup by Lambert, a 3-pointer by Saunders and an layup by Henderson put the Eagles on top by seven, 55-48, with 5:05 left to play.

A stickback by Saunders pushed the margin to double digits with 2:11 left and the Maroons would get no closer than seven points down the stretch.

Jordan Gholson and Erin Jenkins paced the Maroons with 17 points each, but Gholson scored just two in the second half. Roanoke's All-ODAC first team pick Caitlyn Long was held to just four points.
