Rob Rice knocked down a pair of free throws with 3.5 seconds
left in overtime to lift the Bridgewater College Eagles to a 67-66
victory at Washington and Lee.
The Generals jumped out to an early, 10-point lead, 14-4 but the
Eagles whittled away at the margin and took the lead, 23-22, on a
layup by Segar Jordan with 3:10 left in the half.
BC's Dominic Trawick and W&L's Ben Heller traded
hoops before a 3-pointer by Michael Scorsome put the Eagles up by
four, 28-24. Jordan hit two free throws to make it a six-point
lead, but Heller's layup cut the margin to four, 30-26, at
the break.
The Eagles held a nine-point, 53-44, lead with 5:09 left to play,
but an 8-0 run by the Generals cut the margin to four points.
Justin Reavis hit two crucial foul shots with 32 seconds left to
put the Eagles up by three, but Chris McHugh drained a long
3-pointer to tie the score, 56-56, with 20 seconds left.
Rice swished a 17-footer with five seconds left for an apparent
game-winner, but Isaiah Goodman was fouled with one second left and
the Generals' guard hit both foul shots to force
overtime.
The teams traded hoops early in overtime with a jumper by Trawick
gave the Eagles a two-point lead with 1:49 left. Zac White then hit
1two foul shots to tie the score and then a BC turnover gave the
ball back to the Generals.
Heller hit 1-of-2 at the line with 45 seconds left, setting the
stage for Rice's heroics. The Eagles' Jake Johnson
missed a chance to put the Eagles ahead with a 17-footer, but Rice
grabbed the long rebound to give the Eagles another chance.
After a timeout with 12 seconds left, Rice was tripped as he tried
to drive past his defender and the BC senior hit both foul shots to
give the Eagles the lead. McHugh's long 3-pointer came up
short at the buzzer as the Eagles escaped with the victory.
Trawick led the Eagles with 23 points and Rice added 10. Heller
scored a game-high 24 points to pace the Generals. Trawick also
pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Eagles to a dominating 44-28
advantage on the glass.
The Eagles are now 13-10 overall and 9-5 in the ODAC. W&L drops
to 6-8 in the conference play and the Generals are also 13-10
overall.
