Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater's
(2-1) women's basketball squad outscored the Averett (2-1)
bench by a 35-0 tally in a back and forth affair before the Eagles
pulled away late to defeat the Cougars by a 69-57 in the home
opener.
Averett controlled the game early and forced 14 Bridgewater
turnovers in the first half to take a 30-26 lead into the locker
room.
Bridgewater came alive at the onset of the second stanza and
used a 12-5 run over the first 5:42 of the second half to take its
first lead of the game at a 38-35 margin with 14:18 to play.
Both teams would trade leads over the course of the next three
minutes before the Eagles took the lead for good at a 40-39 score
with 11 and change to play.
Bridgewater extended its lead to 50-44 with 7:54 to play before
an Averett run brought the game to its third tie at a 50-50 tally
with 5:49 left.
The two teams would trade baskets over the next four plus
minutes, but the Eagles never trailed over the final minutes of the
contest and corrected poor first-half-foul shooting to take down
the Cougars by a 69-57 tally in the Nininger Hall opener for the
women.
BC outshot Averett by a 40-27% margin, while the Eagles defense
forced 21 turnovers.
From beyond the arc, Bridgewater was 4-of-8 for 50%. Averett
finished the game 4-of-18 for 22%.
Junior Jordan Burkholder led all BC scorers with 19 points,
after being held to two points in the first stanza. Senior Kristin
Bosserman also chipped in a season-high 13 points.
On the glass, the Eagles out rebounded Averett by a 54-42
margin, with a trio of Eagles leading the team with seven boards a
piece.
Averett was led by Ashley Washington's double-double
performance. Washington scored a game-high 23 points and pulled in
15 rebounds.
The Cougars won the turnover battle, forcing 28 BC turnovers,
while the Eagles were able to force 21 Averett miscues.
In the paint, the Cougars held a slight edge at a 28-26 margin.
Bridgewater is back in action on December 1, when the squad
opens up Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Roanoke. Tip-off
from Roanoke is slated for 7:00 p.m.
