Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College built up
a 20-point lead in the second half, but had to hold on down the
stretch to defeat Averett, 80-74, on the second day of the Don
Glick Classic.
The Eagles led 49-31 at the half and with 9:37 left in the game,
two free throws by Cody Griffith gave the Eagles a 67-47 lead.
Averett then went on a 17-2 run t cut the margin to 69-64 with
4:51 left to play.
The Cougars cut the margin to three points, 72-69 on a 3-pointer
by Ruben Pierce with 3:01 left to play, but Averett was unable to
get any closer.
The teams traded empty possessions until Dominic Trawick knocked
down a huge 3-pointer to push the lead to six with 2:05 remaining
Trawick had his second straight big effort, finishing with a
double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds. Jake Johnson added 13
points and seven rebounds for the Eagles. Kyle Hammond scored nine
points, all in the first half, while Justin Brake and D.J. Billups
scored eight apiece.
"Dom showed that he can be more than just a scorer with a
double-double and Jake had a solid night for us," Bridgewater head
coach Don Burgess said. "It was also good to see two or three other
guys flirting with double figures. We need to have three to four
guys consistently scoring double figures to be a good college
basketball team."
The Eagles dominated the boards by a 52-33 margin, led by
Trawick's 11 boards and nine by Segar Jordan.
Kenny Hart paced Averett with 20 points and Chad Hardway added
19.
"You have to give Averett credit. They could have packed it in,
but they played hard the entire game," Burgess said. "In the final
10 minutes, they started knocking down some shots and made a big
run at us. We showed some perseverance and some poise in the final
minutes and that was good to see."
In Sunday's other contest, Eastern Mennonite rolled to a 95-73
victory over Wesley.
Trawick was named the tournament's MVP after averaging 28.5
points during the two games. He was joined on the all-tournament
team by Averett's Kenny Hart, Wesley's David Langan and EMU's Eli
Crawford, Todd Phillips and D.J. Hinson.
