Big First Half Sends Eagles Past Knights

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College scored four goals in the first 16 minutes Wednesday on the way to a 6-0 halftime lead and the Eagles went on to defeat Southern Virginia, 6-1, in non-conference action.

With the victory, the Eagles are now 5-1 overall on the season.

Bridgewater scored in the seventh minute to take the lead. Freshman midfielder Hanna Randolph headed a Southern Virginia goal kick back into the offensive end and Bridget Fabiani scored from just inside the box for a 1-0 Eagles lead.

A minute later Eagles defender Maddie Grim stepped in front of a Southern Virginia pass and played the ball ahead to Hunter Collier and the Eagles sophomore found the back of the net to make the score 2-0.

Bridgewater scored again in the 16th minute when midfielder Sydney Ryan sent a through ball ahead to Catherine Haufe who had a good run down the middle of the field. Haufe slid past the defender and beat the keeper with her shot, giving Bridgewater a 3-0 lead. The goal was Haufe's fifth of the season.

Thirty-three seconds later, Bailey Kratz made it 4-0 when she went past her defender near the top of the box and hit a shot with her left foot past the keeper.

The Eagles scored on a set piece in the 30th minute to pad the lead. Randolph took the corner kick and sent a ball into the box onto the foot of Collier who took the ball out of the air and punched it past the keeper just inside the near post for her team-leading sixth goal of the season, making the score 5-0.

Bridgewater scored its final goal in the 36th minute with a pair of freshmen combining for the score. Angel Finch sent a pass across the box to the far post and Emily York touched the ball past the keeper, just inside the post, for a 6-0 Eagles advantage.

The Knights avoided the shutout when Jamilla Anderson scored in the 78th minute.

Bridgewater's Sunday game against North Carolina Wesleyan has been cancelled due to the hurricane threat. The Eagles return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Frostburg State. Bridgewater's next home game is Saturday, Sept. 22 when the Eagles open conference play against Emory & Henry.
